What the Heck is Content Curation, and Why Is It Important?

Posted by Geoff Skadra on Tue, Feb 14, 2017 @ 12:09 PM

Digital marketing is a tough industry to follow. There are always new terms popping up and new rules to follow, so it is difficult to determine which ones will stick and which ones will pass with the season.

“Content curation” is one of those terms that has been popping up more and more frequently in blogs and news feeds. You may have heard of it before, but what the heck is it? Why is it so important?

What is content curation?

Let me start by saying that content curation is NOT content creation.

Content curation is the process of gathering information relevant to a particular topic or area of interest and distributing it back to your audience with a particular goal in mind.

What is the key?

It does not matter what type of content it is. It could be a mix of blogs, videos, podcasts, etc.

The key is that they are all related to the same topic, targeted to the same audience, and distributed with the same goal.

The idea is to gather and share the best and most relevant content in conjunction with your own content.

Obviously, creating quality content is a great way to build your authority, but it's not the only way. In addition to sharing your own content, you should also be sharing the content of others.

What other information are your prospects looking for? What do they find entertaining, inspiring or useful? Seek out content that fills those needs.

Why is it so important?

Builds Authority

"When you begin to show support for already trusted sources, your prospects will begin to trust you and associate you with these sources."

Sharing content that is relevent to your business can help build authority for your business. When you begin to show support for already trusted sources, your prospects will begin to trust you and associate you with these sources. Thus, building authority and credibility.

Builds relationships

"...it can lead to networking opportunities that include collaboration, content partnerships, and cross promotion."

When you share the content of others, in addition to your own good content, you aren't just building authority, you are also building relationships. People appreciate it when you share what they have to offer. This opens a door to further engagement that can lead to networking opportunities that include collaboration, content partnerships, and cross promotion.

Builds Online Presence

"When you share content from other influencers, you may open the door to connecting with their audience, which means growing your own."

When you share content from other influencers, you may open the door to connecting with their audience, which means growing your own.

At first, your prospects may only click on links that you have shared from other sources, but through this, they will begin to recognize your name. After a while, they will begin to read the content you have created (assuming that it is good content). This will really help increase visibility and brand recognition.

Provides Value to Your Prospects

"When you share engaging content, even when it is from other sources, your prospects will begin to associate you with being helpful and valuable."

When you share engaging content, even when it is from other sources, your prospects will begin to associate you with being helpful and valuable. Through this, you will build community, loyalty and ultimately, your customer base.

Final Recap

Content curation is an activity that adds value to your audience and allows you to build more relationships. Most importantly, it can help grow your authority, and ultimately, grow your business.
