5 Reasons You're Failing to Build a Strong Online Presence

Posted by Katrina Stewart on Mon, Jan 23, 2017 @ 01:57 PM

Building an online presence is a hefty task to take on for any small to mid-size business. If you have attempted this and feel like you're getting nowhere, you are not alone! Here is a list of the top 5 reasons businesses fail at this task.

#1 - It can cost a lot.
At first, it may seem like you are investing a lot of time, money, and effort into getting your business recognized online. If not carefully thought out and planned, your project could turn into a huge vacuum that just sucks you and your company further and further into a deep dark hole. Don’t let that happen. Take the time to do your research or hire a professional. It will save you loads of time, money, and headaches in the end.

#2 - You don’t understand the ins and outs of marketing online.
From blogging and SEO to social media marketing, building an online presence is a huge project to take on. There are companies that literally dedicate full-time employees to each individual aspect of online marketing. This is one of those things that needs to be carefully analyzed and constantly improved. Just keep trying, and be patient with the process. It will pay off in the end!

#3 – Your message is inconsistent.
Make sure you aren’t confusing your customers when they visit you on different social media channels. Each channel needs to have a consistent message and tone. Be very cautious of the details. Check your tagline, about us section, and your logo across all of your channels to be as consistent as possible.

#4 – You aren’t targeting the right audience.
This is one of those things I can’t help but preach about because it is truly so important! If you aren’t targeting a specific audience you will never be able to build a successful online presence. Your message, images, and tone must speak to your audience, otherwise, they will move on to another brand or company with whom they feel a connection. Sit down and really think about your target audience. It could make all the difference.

#5 – Your reviews (or lack of) are killing your credibility.
Your buyers are easily influenced by the comments other customers have made about you. If you have multiple negative reviews, this could be a major red flag for potential customers. Make sure you take the time to respond to any complaints and voice your side of the situation. This goes a long way in convincing your potential customers that you might not be so bad after all.

“Well, what if I have no reviews?” you ask?

Believe it or not, a lack of reviews could be negatively impacting your online presence, too! If this is one of the challenges you are facing, this could be a great time to begin a campaign to collect some great reviews!

Don't give up on your online marketing efforts. Building a successful online presence for a small to mid-size business is a task that must not be taken lightly. If you remain patient and persistant, you will begin to see results soon!
