3 Reasons to Convince Your Boss to Replace Your Work Computer

Find me on:

Many company's try to extend the life of their hardware far past the recommended lifespan, and understandably so. However, holding off until the last possible second to replace your company computers could end up costing you much more in the long run. Here's why.

1. Old hardware could cost you more time and money.

When things break or need replaced on a piece of equipment that is more than 4 or 5 years old, it is often more expensive to fix and can take more time to get replacement parts (if they are even still available.) Your computer could be down for weeks and could end up costing more to keep up and running than it would if you just started fresh with a new machine.

2. Newer machines have the potential for a higher productivity rate.

Speed of equipment directly correlates with the speed at which employees can get things done. Faster equipment = faster productivity.

3. Savings on energy usage.

On average a single physical server will cost you $800 - $1200 per year in electricity costs. If you leverage virtualization to run multiple virtualized servers on a physical server, you could reduce your overhead costs each year.

Bonus: Lower Turnover Rate.

When employees have old equipment that doesn’t function properly: computers that are slow, laptop batteries that don’t charge, etc., they feel neglected and undervalued. Don’t let outdated equipment be the reason that your best talents walk out the door.

Here is a quick chart for the life span of business hardware:

  • Laptop Computers: 3-4 Years
  • Desktop Computers: 4-5 Years
  • Servers: 5-6 Years

You should consult a technology company to help you design an assessment management and replacement plan. Not only will they be able to advise you on which equipment is the best fit for your company, but with a structured replacement plan in place you'll rotate in new hardware gradually versus having to replace a large number of machine all at once.
